Dania Beach is the oldest incorporated city in Broward County, and it shows in the housing. Some of the homes here predate almost everything else in the county. The city runs from the ocean west past I-95, mixing century-old cottages, post-war neighborhoods, waterfront homes, and newer condominium construction near the beach.
The historic core
Dania Beach oldest housing includes small wood-frame and masonry homes from the early twentieth century, many since renovated. These are the kind of homes where original hardware occasionally survives.
Locks you will find: On unrenovated older homes, mortise lock bodies recessed into the door edge, or rim locks mounted on the interior face. These are heavy, well-made mechanisms — the problem is not durability but keys. After a century and multiple owners, the original keys are usually long gone and no locksmith can simply cut a replacement from nothing.
The practical options on a historic door are to service the existing mortise lock and fit a new cylinder to it, or to replace the hardware entirely. The first preserves the look of the door and is usually what an owner of a historic home wants.
Post-war and mid-century neighborhoods
The bulk of Dania Beach single-family housing went up between the 1940s and the 1970s — concrete block homes, small lots, some with additions built over the decades.
Locks you will find: Schlage and Kwikset cylindrical locks, with deadbolts original on later builds and retrofitted on earlier ones. Hardware of this age is generally serviceable but worn.
The beach side and the waterfront
East of Federal Highway and toward the ocean, Dania Beach has condominium buildings, older beach cottages, and homes along the waterway.
Locks you will find: Condo unit locks and deadbolts with association-controlled common entries. On the single-family waterfront homes, more exterior openings than most people count — front door, side door, garage, slider, and often a gate or dock access.
Salt air is a real factor this close to the ocean. It corrodes cylinder internals and seizes moving parts. A lock that has become stiff or that needs the key jiggled is usually corroding rather than simply worn, and dry lubricant plus fresh pins will often restore it if the cylinder body is still sound.
