Parkland sits at the far northwest corner of Broward County and is the county newest large residential city by build date. It stayed rural far longer than its neighbors, and the great majority of its housing went up from the 1990s onward in gated, master-planned communities on large lots. That makes Parkland unusual among Broward cities: most of the hardware here is modern, and the work is less about worn-out locks and more about the number of openings on a property.

Master-planned and gated communities

Parkland housing is dominated by planned communities built from the 1990s through the 2010s — large single-family homes, gated entries, HOA governance, and generous lot sizes by South Florida standards.

Locks you will find: Modern residential hardware with deadbolts standard throughout. On the larger and newer homes, multi-point locking systems on tall entry doors are common — one handle motion engaging bolts at the top, center, and bottom of the door. Post-2002 construction generally carries impact-rated entry doors and sliders.

Multi-point locks are excellent when the door is properly aligned and frustrating when it is not. A door that has settled even slightly will bind, and the handle will not fully engage all the bolts. That is an adjustment issue rather than a lock failure, and it is worth correcting rather than forcing the handle.

The number of openings is the real issue

A large Parkland home routinely has more exterior doors than the owner counts: front entry, a side or service door, a garage-to-house door, sometimes a second garage door, sliders to a pool deck, French doors to a patio, and a gate to a side yard or pool enclosure.

A rekey that covers the front door and stops there leaves most of the house on old keys. When we rekey a Parkland home, we walk the perimeter first and count every opening the owner controls.

Gated does not mean secured

A community gate controls vehicle access and nothing else. It does not stop someone who walks in, follows a resident through, or arrives as a contractor or delivery. The gate is a filter, not a lock.

The practical consequence is that homeowners in gated communities sometimes under-invest in their own door hardware on the assumption the gate is doing the work. Your front door is the actual barrier. It is worth having the right lock on it.

New construction and smart locks

Newer Parkland homes are frequently prepped for electronic and smart locks. These work well as a convenience layer, but the underlying mechanical lock still matters: most electronic deadbolts contain a standard key cylinder as a backup, and that cylinder can be rekeyed like any other. If a builder or previous owner set up an electronic lock, changing the codes is not the same as rekeying the mechanical override.

What we do

  • House rekey — every exterior opening, not just the front door.
  • Lock change — when hardware is worn, corroded, or damaged.
  • Deadbolt installation and strike reinforcement.
  • Home lockout — non-destructive entry, identification showing the address required.
  • Sliding and patio door locks.
  • Mailbox locks — cluster box cylinder replacement.
