Residential Locksmith Service for Broward County Homes

A home is the one place where the locks have to work every single day, for every person who lives there. When a key stops turning, a deadbolt sticks, or a door will not latch, the problem is rarely dramatic, but it is always urgent to the person standing outside it. Broward County Locksmith is a mobile locksmith that works on homes, townhouses and condominium units across Broward County, Florida. Call (954) 888-8800 and describe the door, the lock and what is happening, and we will tell you what the job involves.

This page explains the residential work we do, how we decide between repairing, rekeying and replacing a lock, and what to expect when a technician arrives. It is written for homeowners and renters who want to understand the job before they call, not for readers who want a sales pitch.

House Lockouts

A house lockout is usually one of three things: a key that was lost or left inside, a lock that has failed internally, or a door that has swollen or shifted until it no longer turns freely. The right approach depends on which one it is. When the lock is working and the key is simply unavailable, a technician can often open the door without damaging the lock, the door or the frame. When the lock itself has failed, opening it may mean working around the cylinder, and replacing the cylinder afterward is the honest fix.

Before any work starts, a technician will ask you to confirm that you live at the address or have the right to enter it. That is not a formality. It protects every resident in the county, including you, from someone talking their way into a home that is not theirs. Have a photo ID or a piece of mail with the address on it ready when the technician arrives.

If anyone, including a child or a pet, is inside a closed home, or if there is a stove or other hazard running, tell us on the phone first. Those situations are handled differently from an ordinary lockout, and in a true emergency you should call 911 before you call a locksmith.

Rekeying Instead of Replacing

Rekeying changes the pins inside an existing lock cylinder so that the old keys no longer work and a new key does. The handle, deadbolt body and finish stay on the door. It is the standard choice after you move into a place that other people lived in, after a roommate or partner leaves, after a contractor or house sitter has had a key, or any time you cannot say with confidence how many copies of your key exist.

Rekeying is not always possible. Cheap or badly worn locks sometimes cannot be rekeyed reliably, and a mixed set of locks from different manufacturers may not share a key without replacing some of the hardware. A technician will check what is on your door and tell you plainly whether rekeying is sensible or whether new hardware is the better use of your money.

  • Choose rekeying when the lock is in good condition and the only concern is who holds keys.
  • Choose replacement when the lock is worn, damaged, loose in the door, or not strong enough for the door it protects.
  • Ask for keyed alike hardware if you want one key to operate the front door, the back door and the garage entry.

Deadbolts and Hardware Upgrades

Many homes in Broward County were built with the lightest hardware that passes inspection. A standard builder grade deadbolt can be adequate in a quiet building and weak in a busy one. Upgrading to a higher grade deadbolt, adding a reinforced strike plate with longer screws, or fitting a door that resists forced entry costs less than most people expect and removes the most common weak point on a residential door.

Hardware is rated in grades. Grade 1 is the strongest and is common on commercial doors, Grade 2 is a strong residential choice, and Grade 3 is the lightest. The grade tells you how the lock holds up to repeated use and to force, which matters more than finish or brand name. We explain the options for your specific door before you decide, including the trade offs between strength, convenience and appearance.

Smart locks are a common request. They can be a good fit for rentals, for families with several people coming and going, and for anyone who dislikes carrying keys. They also depend on batteries, on door alignment and on a quality installation. We will tell you whether your door and frame suit one, and what to expect when the batteries run low.

Repairs After a Break In or Attempted Break In

After a break in or an attempt, the visible damage is only part of the problem. A split door jamb, a bent strike plate, a damaged latch or a cylinder that has been forced can leave a door that looks closed but is no longer secure. We inspect the lock, the strike, the jamb and the door edge, secure what can be secured, and recommend what should be replaced. If the door cannot be locked safely, we will tell you what to do for the night and what the permanent repair involves.

If you are dealing with a break in, report it to the police first and take photographs of the damage before anything is changed. Insurance companies often want to see the original condition.

Doors That Stick, Drag or Will Not Latch

Doors in South Florida move with humidity. A door that latched well in winter can drag in the wet season, and a strike plate that has drifted out of alignment by a few millimeters can stop a deadbolt from throwing fully. Not every one of these problems is a locksmith problem, but many are, and a short adjustment of the strike plate, the hinges or the latch can solve what looks like a failed lock.

If your key turns hard, do not force it. Forcing a key is the fastest way to break it off in the cylinder. Spray dry lubricant rated for locks, not oil, and call us if the key still does not turn smoothly.

Broken Keys and Keys Stuck in the Lock

A key that snaps off in a cylinder can usually be removed without replacing the lock, provided the broken piece has not been pushed deeper by repeated attempts. Resist the urge to pull it out with pliers. A technician uses extraction tools made for the job, and after the piece is out the key can be copied or the cylinder rekeyed in the same visit.

How We Decide What a Job Needs

We would rather solve your problem with the least expensive correct fix than sell you hardware you do not need. The decision usually follows the same steps.

  1. We listen to what happened and look at the door, the lock and the frame.
  2. We test the lock to see whether it is worn, damaged or simply misaligned.
  3. We explain the options in plain language, including what each one means for security and for the rest of the door.
  4. You choose, and we do the work. If something unexpected turns up, we stop and talk to you first.

Pricing and How Quotes Work

Quotes are given by phone. When you call (954) 888-8800 and describe the lock and the problem, we can tell you what the work involves and what to expect for most standard jobs. Some jobs cannot be quoted accurately without seeing them, such as a damaged door frame, a mixed set of older hardware, or a lock that has been tampered with. Those jobs need a technician on site, and an on site visit carries a service call charge, which we explain on the phone before anyone is dispatched. We do not give out numbers we cannot stand behind.

Service Across Broward County

We work in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Davie, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, Sunrise, Weston, Miramar, Tamarac, Margate, Coconut Creek, Deerfield Beach, Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach and the surrounding communities. Each area has its own housing styles, from older masonry homes to canal front properties to newer condominium towers, and the locks on them are not all the same. We carry the tools and common hardware to handle most residential jobs in a single visit.

Questions Homeowners Ask

Will you damage my door to open it?

The goal is always to open the door without damage. Most residential locks can be opened without harming the door or frame. If a lock has failed in a way that makes that impossible, we tell you before we proceed.

How do I know the locksmith is legitimate?

Ask for the business name when you call, ask whether a technician will come to your address, and ask what the service call charge is before you agree. A legitimate business answers all three without hesitation. Be cautious of anyone who quotes a very low number on the phone and a different number at the door.

Can you make a key without the original?

In many cases yes. If a lock can be opened or taken apart, a key can be cut or the lock rekeyed so that a new key works. The method depends on the lock.

Should I rekey or change my locks after moving in?

Either one stops the previous keys from working. Rekeying is usually the more economical choice when the hardware is in good condition, and replacement makes sense when it is not.

Locks and Doors in Different Kinds of Broward Homes

Broward County has a wide mix of housing, and the locks on each type of home tend to have different problems. Older masonry houses often have heavy wooden or steel doors with aging hardware that has been repaired several times. Newer single family homes usually have lighter doors with standard deadbolts and a keypad or smart lock on the garage entry. Townhouses and condominium units often share rules about what hardware can be changed, so it is worth checking with the association before you replace anything on the unit entry door.

Coastal humidity and salt air affect every lock in the county. Brass and plated finishes can tarnish, internal parts can corrode, and cylinders that are never lubricated start to bind. A lock that is sluggish today is usually telling you something, and a short service visit now can prevent a lockout later.

Getting Ready for a Locksmith Visit

A little preparation makes the visit faster and keeps the cost of the job down. Before the technician arrives, it helps to have a few things ready.

  • Identification and something showing the address, such as a bill or lease, so we can confirm you are entitled to the work.
  • A clear path to the door and, if you have pets, a plan to keep them out of the way.
  • Any keys you still have for the lock, even if they are worn or do not turn well. They give the technician useful information.
  • A note of what happened and when the problem started, including whether the lock ever worked normally.

Keeping Residential Locks Working Longer

Most lock failures are slow. Keys get worn, strike plates move, and lubricant dries out. A few habits extend the life of a lock considerably.

  • Use a dry graphite or lock specific lubricant once or twice a year. Avoid heavy oils and general purpose sprays, which collect dust and gum up the pins.
  • Replace keys that have been copied many times from copies. Each generation of copy loses a little accuracy, and a worn key wears the lock in turn.
  • Tighten loose handles and deadbolt plates when you notice movement, before the screws strip the wood.
  • Keep the door aligned. If it begins to drag, address the hinges or the strike plate rather than forcing the latch.

If you would like a technician to look over the locks on your home, call (954) 888-8800 and tell us what you have and what concerns you. We will explain what the work involves and how the quote is handled, whether by phone or on site.
